Pennsylvania offers top-notch trail events to challenge runners of all abilities

Tens of thousands of runners take to the streets of Pennsylvania each year for races–from marathons in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia to a half-marathon where folks race alongside the Amish in the Valley of No Wires. But some of our state's most treasured running events take place on our trails.

A technical runner's dream come true, trail events in Pennsylvania state parks and forests are geared toward the series endurance athlete, but are broken down into smaller races for weekend warriors, and slower movers to enjoy as well.

For instance, the Ironmaster's Challenge, a 50K ultra-event in Pine Grove Furnace State Park and Michaux State Forest each April, involves orienteering the Appalachian Trail. It taxes runners' minds as much as their bodies!

Many of these trail events, like the Oil Creek 100K Trail Run or the Rachel Carson Trail 34-Mile Challenge, culminate at famous historic landmarks, where competitors learn about our state's heritage while cooling down with beer and barbecue.
