Butler, PA
Region: Pittsburgh & Its Countryside
The intriguingly named Big Butler Fair is not a celebration of large domestic managers but of this town's expansively friendly spirit. Every Independence Day, a full-scale carnival, a petting zoo, concerts, fireworks, exhibits, and (of course) food glorify the atmosphere of the sort of small town we all wish we'd grown up in. Once controlled by the Iroquois, the land that became Butler played host to French forts beginning in 1753. The town was named for General Richard Butler, a hero of the Revolutionary War. Proximity to Moraine State Park, the Commonwealth's third-largest park, makes Butler popular for outdoor fun. Golf courses and antique shops also keep visitors and locals busy.
