Jim Thorpe, PA
Region: Pocono Mountains
Originally founded as Mauch Chunk in 1818, the borough was renamed Jim Thorpe in 1953 in honor of Olympic medal winner, James Francis Thorpe. In addition to its title as one of the Most Beautiful Small Towns in America, visitors frequent Jim Thorpe from nearby Philadelphia and New York City for hiking, biking, white water rafting, skiing, and horseback riding. The Lehigh Valley and Flagstaff Mountain provide a beautiful setting with nature and parks galore. Guests can additionally boat, fish, swim and camp near area lakes for a respite from big cities. In addition to the historic Old Jail Museum, Mauch Chunk Museum, No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum, and Eckley Miner’s Village don’t miss the Asa Packer and Harry Packer Mansions, two elaborate local landmarks. The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, Old Mauch Chunk Train Station and Mauch Chunk Opera House also offer historically significant entertainment. For more of what Jim Thorpe offers, view their reviews.
