Pennsylvania and the Groundhog Day Tradition

Groundhog Day is more than a fun winter ritual. It’s a beloved Pennsylvania tradition rooted in centuries-old folklore. It traces back to Candlemas, an early Christian holiday where clear skies were believed to signal a longer winter. Romans carried this belief to Germanic regions, where people said a hedgehog would cast a shadow and predict six more weeks of cold. German immigrants brought the tradition to Pennsylvania, substituting the local groundhog.

In 1886, Punxsutawney’s Groundhog Club declared their groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, the official weather prophet, thanks in part to a local newspaper editor who was really good at promotion. Phil’s legend grew, and over the years, this local celebration has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, drawing curious visitors, fans and travelers looking for an unforgettable mid-winter adventure.
