Pennsbury Manor is the 43-acre plantation of William Penn. William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, planned and directed the construction of Pennsbury Manor, located on the Delaware River, 25 miles north of Philadelphia. Hannah Callowhill Penn (1671-1726), head housekeeper May Lofty, cook Ann Nichols, contract washerwoman Elizabeth Seale and two enslaved women Sue and Pathenia, formed the core community of women who kept all aspects of life at William Penn's country estate functioning. Following her husband William's stroke, Hannah Penn became manager of the estate and performed all official functions. This reconstructed Manor House features period furnishings, outbuildings, livestock, gardens, special programs, workshops, and demonstrations throughout the year.
