Spring break doesn’t have to mean crowded airports or far-flung destinations. Some of the best getaways are just a short road trip away! From stargazing beneath some of the darkest skies on the East Coast to blooming gardens and iconic landmarks in the Philadelphia region, these road trip inspired adventures prove that an unforgettable spring break can start in PA.

Pennsylvania Wilds and Pine Creek Gorge Trip Itinerary (North Central PA)

Day 1: Wellsboro and Pine Creek Gorge

  • Stroll Historic Wellsboro's Main Street: Start your trip with a stroll down Wellsboro’s postcard-perfect Main Street. Pop into Arise Café for a fresh breakfast sandwich or coffee, browse local shops, and soak up the town’s classic gas-lit charm.
  • Leonard Harrison State Park and Pine Creek Gorge: Head to the “Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania” for dramatic, sweeping views of Pine Creek Gorge. The overlook is a must-see in early spring, especially on a day with clear blue skies. 
  • Pine Creek Rail Trail: In the afternoon, pedal or hike a scenic section of the 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail that follows along the Pine Creek Gorge at the bottom of the canyon. With peaceful forest views and gentle terrain, USA Today once named the Pine Creek Rail Trail as one of the greatest places to take a bike tour in the world.

Day 2: Coudersport and Cherry Springs State Park

  • Coudersport and the Eliot Ness Museum: On your one-hour drive north, stop in Coudersport to visit the Eliot Ness Museum, where you can check out antique cars and trucks, and learn about the allure surrounding the legendary lawman’s connection to the area. Advance tickets are recommended. 
  • Cherry Springs State Park: Arrive at Cherry Springs State Park before sunset to settle in and watch the sky shift colors. Known worldwide for its exceptionally dark skies, it’s worth getting there early to secure a good viewing spot! Once night falls, look up. Cherry Springs offers some of the best stargazing on the East Coast, with clear views of the Milky Way, constellations, and meteor showers on the right night. 

Day 3: Benezette and Elk Country

  • Elk Country Visitor Center: Begin your final day just an hour and 20 minutes south in Benezette and discover the East Coast’s largest free-roaming elk herd at the Elk Country Visitor Center, where exhibits and viewing areas help bring the experience to life. 
  • Elk Viewing Scenic Pull-Offs: Spend the day driving nearby backroads and stopping at designated scenic pull-offs for elk viewing. Early morning and late afternoon are prime times to spot these massive, majestic animals grazing in open fields.

Pittsburgh and Erie Road Trip Itinerary
(Western Pennsylvania)

Day 1: Downtown Pittsburgh and The Strip District

  • Ride the Duquesne Incline: Kick off your Pittsburgh getaway with an iconic ride on the historic Duquesne Incline for sweeping views of the city skyline, rivers, and iconic yellow bridges – a must-do first stop. 
  • Lunch in the Strip District: Head to the Strip District for lunch at the original Primanti Bros. location, home of Pittsburgh’s most famous sandwich, piled high with meat, fries, and slaw. Afterward, explore specialty shops, bakeries, and local markets lining Penn Avenue. 
  • Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens: Post lunch, spend the afternoon at Phipps Conservatory, where vibrant spring blooms fill the glasshouse even if the weather outside is still chilly. Seasonal displays and lush indoor gardens make this a perfect early spring stop for all ages. 

Day 2: Kid-Friendly Museums and Sports

  • Andy Warhol Museum or Heinz History Center: Choose between two Pittsburgh classics: the Andy Warhol Museum for bold pop art and contemporary culture, or the interactive Heinz History Center to dive into the region’s rich industrial, sports, and innovation history. 
  • Game Night in Pittsburgh: Wrap up the day with live sports action! Head indoors to PPG Paints Arena to cheer on the Pittsburgh Penguins

Day 3: Erie and Presque Isle State Park

  • Drive to Erie: Hit the road early and make the scenic 2 hour drive north to Erie, Pennsylvania’s lakeside destination on Lake Erie. 
  • Presque Isle State Park: Spend the morning walking, biking, or taking in the sights of Pennsylvania's only shoreline at  Presque Isle State Park. This sandy peninsula is filled with lake views, beaches, wildlife, and peaceful trails – a refreshing change of pace from city sightseeing. 
  • Erie Art Museum or ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum: Before heading home, stop by the Erie Art Museum for rotating exhibits and local art. Traveling with kids? Swap it out for ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum, packed with hands-on exhibits and interactive fun.

Brandywine Valley and Philadelphia Road Trip Itinerary (Southeastern PA)

Day 1: Kennett Square and Longwood Gardens

  • Explore Downtown Kennett Square: Kick off your spring break in Kennett Square, a charming small town known for its walkable downtown and local flavor. Grab coffee at the Market at Talula’s Table or Philter Coffee, then browse independent shops and bakeries along State Street.
  • Longwood Gardens: Spend the afternoon at Longwood Gardens, where early spring brings fresh blooms, colorful seasonal displays, and a warm escape inside the Conservatory. Wander the outdoor gardens, fountains, and greenhouse rooms at your own pace. 

Day 2: Valley Forge and King of Prussia

  • Valley Forge National Historical Park: In the morning, head 45 minutes to Valley Forge National Historical Park to explore one of the most important sites of the American Revolution. Walk or bike the park’s scenic trails while passing historic buildings, monuments and open landscapes. 

  • King of Prussia Mall: After soaking up some history, switch gears at King of Prussia Mall, one of the largest shopping destinations in the country. Check out new additions like Netflix House for immersive entertainment and Eataly for Italian bites, groceries, and espresso. 

Day 3: Philadelphia

  • Independence National Historical Park: Start your day exploring the grounds of Independence National Historical Park, home to some of the nation’s most iconic landmarks and less than 45 minutes from Valley Forge. See the Liberty Bell, tour Independence Hall, and stop by the nearby Betsy Ross House  or Elfreth's Alley, the oldest, continuously inhabited street in the country. 
  • Lunch at Reading Terminal Market or Society Hill: Refuel at Reading Terminal Market, where dozens of vendors serve everything from cheesesteaks to Amish baked goods. Prefer to stay outdoors? Just south of Philadelphia's Old City is Society Hill where you can find a relaxed lunch at a local café like Loretta’s.
  • Philadelphia Museum of Art: Wrap up your trip at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, exploring world-class collections and snapping a photo on the famous Rocky steps before heading home.
