The East Broad Top Railroad

One hundred fifty years ago, the East Broad Top was among the earliest railroads in America to try a revolutionary new technology: narrow gauge. With its rails only 3' apart, rather than the standard 4' 8.5", it is the oldest operating narrow-gauge railroad anywhere in the United States and the last original narrow-gauge railroad east of the Rocky Mountains. Nestled in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, the EBT stands as a monument to early railroading and our industrial heritage. When the EBT suspended freight service in 1956, its crews simply went home, leaving a living time capsule that the Smithsonian has described as one of the most intact 19th-century industrial sites in the country. Today, we invite visitors to experience this step back in time with scenic, steam-powered train rides, guided tours of the railroad's remarkably intact belt-driven machine shop complex, unique special events, and more!
