Harvesting More: What’s New at the 106th Pennsylvania Farm Show

On Jan. 8, 2022, the 106th Pennsylvania Farm Show will kick off your favorite agricultural activities at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. While the 2021 virtual iteration of the Pennsylvania Farm Show offered us plenty to enjoy – cute chicks, exciting recipes, mind-blowing demonstrations – all from the comfort of our couches, the return to in-person activities means a full, multi-sensory immersion into the best Pennsylvania agriculture has to offer. Whether you want to snuggle a bunny, sample award-winning wines from across the commonwealth, or try delicious, homegrown foods, the Farm Show has something you should check out.

Looking for something new? Here’s a few top picks:

1. Canine Spectacular

Our furry best friends will join the legion of animals on display this year! On Thursday, Jan. 13, prepare to be wowed by canine smarts, speed, and agility at the equine arena where these dynamic doggos show off the skills that make them essential to working farms.

2. Webbed Wonders

The Farm Show’s MVPs – adorable fluffy ducklings – will be on display throughout the week in the Water Fowl Habitat in the poultry hall. Can’t catch them in person? Then take a peek at the live online video feed and see how these webbed wonders work from an underwater view.

3. Apple Awesomeness

The State Horticultural Association of PA will be the apple of your eye this year after you check out their apple-infused treats in the Food Court! Treat your tastebuds to some sweet apple salsa and apple sauce pouches at this booth highlighting one of Pennsylvania’s “core” foods!

4. Industrial Icons

Bethlehem’s National Museum of Industrial History is a new stop for kids this year, inviting them to bring their Farm Show passports to the Ag Explorer area to be stamped when they complete an educational scavenger hunt about Pennsylvania’s beginnings. As a bonus, they’ll become mini-experts in Pennsylvania history as they learn about how our commonwealth grew into the national and work agricultural leader we are today!

5. Beautiful Brews

Smacking your lips to whet your whistle with a tasty PA craft brew? In the Main Hall, sample some of the 121 artisan-crated brews from 24 breweries that are part of the 2022 Farm Show Beer Competition and take home the ones you love for later! For the first time, you can buy your favorite brew and let the taste of Farm Show linger. Now you can swig a sample and maybe even take home a Best in Class, Best of Show or a PA Preferred® Legacy Award winner.

6. Rodeo Clowns

The Farm Show brings the high-stakes, high-fun of the rodeo to your backyard with the Frontier Finals Rodeo. On Friday, Jan. 14, learn what it takes to be a rodeo clown, barrel racer or rodeo queen, or meet star competitors and rodeo luminary Anthony Lucia of Live with Lucia. Thrills and new features are jam-packed into three days of rowdy, raucous rodeo.

7. Prize Pierogies

One of Pennsylvania’s most beloved home-cooked staples, the pierogi, will make its debut in the Farm Show’s Food Court this year courtesy of PA Cooperative Potato Growers. Haven’t had a pierogi? You’re in for a treat when you try this beloved potato dumpling made with fresh, Pennsylvania-grown potatoes!

8. Country Capers

On Tuesday, Jan. 11, show off your backyard skills while working off some of that food-fueled steam at an all-comers cornhole tournament hosted by the Farm Show Junior Committee. Or on Wednesday, Jan. 12, give the country-style line dance-off a go at an event that promises smiles for everyone.

9. Food Frenzy

For something new every day, and almost every hour, the PA Preferred® Culinary Connection stage in Main Hall is the place to see Pennsylvania’s most talented chefs prepare their masterpieces. Sample everything from sweet potato donuts with browned butter custard and buttered pecan English toffee to spicy chicken tangine and chargrilled broccolini. Or have fun saying, “pork schnitzel with parsley spaetzle” three times fast! Be sure to grab a recipe book and some inspiration for your own culinary adventures.
