Discover life as a pioneer on this self-guided interpretive trail located in Elk State Forest. Learn about forest management practices, identify tree species, watch insects, and notice the effects of tree diseases while you hike through the Pine Tree Trail Natural Area. Follow the old wagon trail up the hill to the large stand of white pine that was a farm field in the 1800s. Cross the small intermittent stream that served as the settlers' water source, and take a short hike off the trail to see the rock piles that were once a foundation. Look closely to see the entryway, root cellar, and remains of the chimney! Parking and restrooms at campground. Main loop is 1.75 miles with .45 mile East Hicks Section. Orange blazes.
From the town of Benezette, travel east 8.6 miles on PA 555 to Hicks Run Road. Turn right onto Hicks Run Road. Drive 2.2 miles up Hicks Run Road and turn left onto West Hicks Run Road. Drive 0.1 mile and park at the Hicks Run Campground on the left side of the road.
