The official opening of maple season kicks off on the last Saturday in February with the ceremonial “tree tapping” which is hosted by one of the local maple producers. What festival would be complete without royalty? Every year before the festival, senior girls from high schools within Somerset County vie for the title of Queen Maple in the Maple Queen Scholarship Pageant. The contestant with the highest combined score in the categories of interview, promenade, talent, and on-stage question is crowned Queen Maple. Queen Maple is also awarded a monetary scholarship and several other gifts from the PA Maple Festival and local area sponsors. There are also awards for maple knowledge, and miss congeniality. The first and second maids of honor also receive monetary scholarships. We also have a KING! The Maple King is selected from maple producers who enter items they have produced at their camps. There are 12 categories with 9 being required to enter to be considered for Maple King. The winners are displayed during the festival in the sugar shack. After all of the royalty is selected and the syrup is produced then the festival can begin! At the PA Maple Festival there are so many things to do, see and EAT! Join us at Festival Park where you can tour the historic Maple Manor, see a sugar camp demonstration in the Sugar Shack, tap a tree, visit the old doctor’s office and cobbler shop, live onstage entertainment, and don’t forget the shopping! We have our very own country store where the locals flock to get their hands on some of the homemade goodies and festival souvenirs. There is also an entire building dedicated to craft vendors who sell a little bit of everything from soap to dip mixes to hand made jewelry and that is just a taste of what our craft vendors have to offer.
