Masquerades were very popular events in the 18th century, often hosted by high members of society or royalty to celebrate the period between Twelfth Night and Ash Wednesday. Party goers donning festive costumes and masks would arrive at midnight and enjoy all manner of splendor until the morning light. Festivities would include dancing, decadent desserts, drinks, games, and conviviality.
