Bryan Koulman Dance Company returns to the stage for the first time since pandemic. June 17-18, Artistic Director Bryan Koulman curates an evening of contemporary works for his chamber company of dancers and musicians; featuring freelance dance artists as well as dancers contracted with the Philadelphia Ballet and Philadanco. The concert includes three captivating works: Treadmill (1991), Tiger (2017) and the world premiere of Schedrin (2022). The musical scores include compositions by both classical and pop composers, and will feature live accompanists, treating the audience to another layer of live performance. Set to an original live drum set performed by Ismael Biaz, Treadmill is a rhythmically complex duet that portrays a competitive yet dependent relationship. Tiger, most recently revised, will also be performed with live music, and will feature saxophonist Michael Moss playing pieces originally composed for flute by Debussy, Jolivet and Honegger. The piece will also include 2 selections composed by Christopher Rouse for a recorded percussion ensemble. Koulman’s latest work, Schedrin, showcases a series of duets and quartets that is surreal, unpredictable and exciting. The piece will culminate with all performers on stage for a “grande finale” filled with faux ballroom motifs and bravura ballet steps.
