Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dazzles with technical brilliance and passionate energy, bringing audiences to their feet at every performance. The dancers electrify the stage with new works by some of the most dynamic choreographers of today and signature Ailey classics. This season’s repertory showcases the radiance of the dancers in pieces by great Ailey contemporaries with Twyla Tharp’s Roy’s Joys, a sultry work mixing vernacular dance with ballet and modern technique set to the 1940’s and 50’s jazz soundtrack by Roy Eldridge, and Alvin Ailey’s Survivors, an impassioned tribute to the profound courage and anguish of Nelson and Winnie Mandela. Thrilling new works by Kyle Abraham and Jamar Roberts find reservoirs of love and resilience in our complicated lives and times. Jamar Roberts’ In a Sentimental Mood bridges the past and present with an original composition by Duke Ellington and four jazz standards that are given an avant-garde twist by composer Rafiq Bhatia. Acclaimed choreographer, Kyle Abraham’s newest work, Are You In Your Feelings?, is a celebration of Black culture, Black music, and the youthful spirt that perseveres in us all and is scored to a mixtape of soul, hip-hop, and R&B with songs by Erykah Badu and Jazmine Sullivan. Each program will close with Alvin Ailey's soul-stirring Revelations, the beloved masterpiece that "cannot fail to move" (Vogue).
