Wagner Free Institute of Science

Founded in 1855, the Wagner Institute is a National Historic Landmark natural history museum and educational institution. Its exhibit hall houses an extraordinary collection of more than 100,000 specimens including mounted birds and mammals, fossils, rocks and minerals, insects, shells, dinosaur bones and the first American saber-toothed tiger fossil. The displays date to the 1890s and preserve the original wood and glass display cases with hand-written labels, offering a rare view of a preserved Victorian science museum. Today the Institute is known as one of the region’s historic treasures. Its collections and programs also provide important educational and scientific resources for a wide audience.
