River of the Year: The West Branch of the Susquehanna
It's fun to say, and it's fun to play there, too. And now, it has the added distinction of being recognized as Pennsylvania's River of the Year. The mighty West Branch flows over 200 miles through the heart of the PA WILDS to Sunbury, where it joins the north branch to become the nation's sixteenth largest river and the largest to drain to the Atlantic. The Lenape people named it Susquehanna—"the long winding river"—and this name is certainly appropriate.
The clear waters of the West Branch drain part of the Lumber Heritage Region, where giant white pines fell to fuel the economy of a growing nation. Today, verdant mountains are the backdrop in a land of bountiful recreation and abundant wildlife. Many events celebrate the river: the biggest may be the West Branch Susquehanna Sojourn, in which participants paddle from Keating to Williamsport and discover the wonders of the river along the way. Campsites, meals, shuttles, and programs are provided. So, if you're ready for adventure, check it out.
