Bike Routes of Pennsylvania
The Keystone State is a biker's paradise - wildly varied terrain, gorgeous scenery, and readily accessible trails make this an excellent place to go for a spin, no matter what your skill level.
Not sure where to start? Get your bearings by checking out our Biking page. Then explore the more than 800 miles of Rails to Trails routes, which are suitable for the whole family due to their generally gentle nature. Varying lengths mean you can choose the trail that fits your mood - just a few miles for a casual ride, or clear across the state for a more challenging workout. One of the best and most famous rail-trails is the Great Allegheny Passage, which covers 123 nearly level miles of scenic and historic trail. The historic Lebanon Valley Rail-Trail is also a good one; it gently winds upward and ends with a gorgeous view of the surrounding farmland.
Mountain biking is extremely popular in the State of Independence - we even have our own team! If you'd like to give it a go, check out our mountain biking page and then get your gear together. Ski areas often sport some pretty challenging trails; try the Twin Peaks Loop, which ascends Flagstaff Mountain and Mount Pisgah. For about 600 miles of trails of every variety, check out mountain biking in the Allegheny National Forest (and good luck conquering Rocky Gap). If you're really ambitious and have energy to burn, you could always cycle the Southern Alleghenies, where 25 mountain biking trails and 20 road tours await.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has oodles of info about the Commonwealth's bike routes. Whether you’d like to bike in our state parks, through towns and cities, or out in the boonies, you'll find plenty pf maps, advice, safety rules, and bike laws on the PennDOT site. Happy cycling!
