Gettysburg National Cemetery When the armies marched away from Gettysburg on July 5, 1863, they left behind a destroyed community, as well as thousands and thousands of dead and dying soldiers. The cemetery was dedicated on November 19 of that year. The principle dedication speech, by Edward Everett, was two hours long, and was followed by Abraham Lincoln's two-minute Gettysburg Address.
