A trip along Route 45, also known as the Purple Heart Highway, is a 100 mile journey through scenic central Pennsylvania's Huntingdon, Centre, Union, Northumberland, and Montour Counties. It was christened the "Purple Heart Highway" since the Route 45 corridor has been home to many recipients of the Purple Heart, America's decoration for military personnel who were wounded in combat.
Today, Route 45 celebrates its latest incarnation as a thriving artists' trail. From the village of Water Street in the west, to Mooresburg in the east, the Route 45 corridor is home to a wealth of artists working in many media. Drawing inspiration from the beautiful countryside, these men and women work in both contemporary and traditional styles. The quality and range of their work is outstanding.
One of the more notable stops is Penn's Creek Pottery, a studio and shop in an 1818 grain mill. If you ever wanted to see how old and new can intersect, this is the place! Another must-see is Etcetera, Etc., in Bellefonte. This artists' haven is where you'll find the works of 65 or so talented painters, textile artists, potters, woodworkers, jewelers, and more. The delightful Susquehanna River town of Lewisburg is also a great place to explore; Victorian streets play host to shops, galleries, and all manner of little surprises. One such surprise is the Magpie, which showcases the work of some 100 local artists and artisans.
If you're looking for distinctive artwork - be it a unique gift or shopping for yourself - and the opportunity to interact with artists and craftspeople, be sure to plan your next road trip along Route 45. Route 45 is also home to many charming inns, guesthouses, cabins, and bed and breakfasts, plus modern hotels offering one-of-a-kind experiences for both the seasoned and novice traveler.
