PA Cross Series #3: Phelps School Cross

This past weekend brought round #3 of the PA Cross Series in Malvern, PA.
Not expecting such a big Masters field, I was surprised as the local talent rolled in, including teammate Mike Yozell. Fifty-eight starters toed the line along with Mike & I (Hebe). As I was called up as last year's series champ, I knew I needed a great ride to regain my 2008 series lead, after taking race #2 off.

Yozell got a super start and led the field, with me in second into dangerous turn number one. After that we flawlessly rode our Cannondale bikes away from the field while only two others could follow. Going into the second lap Yozell attacked and I sat up to create the gap. Perfect teamwork exhibit #1 for VisitPA.com cross team. Mike rolled away and I monitored the two other riders. One lap later I bridged to Mike and went on an attack of my own. Mike dutifully kept check on the last remaining rider who was with us - perfect teamwork exhibit #2. I rode solo for two laps and created a large gap. Yozell was awesome at keeping the distance. Once Yozell sensed the competition was done, he set out to join me. Going into the last lap I waited for Mike to catch on and we set out for a final lap - perfect teamwork exhibit #3. With no one in sight we rode hard, smooth and most importantly together as teammates. This was a race we each deserved to win. With a team victory well in hand we decided that I would take the win and roll across the line first. While the crowd was being incited by the announcer of the upcoming super sprint between the two VisitPA.com Mike's, we knew what was going to happen. We rolled across the line as teammates, each of whom rode a great race. The only difference was my wheel happened to hit the stripe first. VisitPA.com worked exhibit #4 of perfect teamwork to a 1,2 at the Phelps School cross race.
