The first time I came to Drake Well Museum a buck crossed the road in front of me and an eagle flew overhead in the sunny sky. Oil Creek and the site were beautiful! Historic oil field machinery sang and people were friendly.
The Civil War General who helped repulse Pickett’s charge
Submitted By: Ed Cohen
Apart from Grant, most Union Civil War generals don’t get good marks for their military skills. In fact, only 16 Union generals received the Thanks of Congress for their performance. One of these was Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. It was Hancock who commanded the Union center that repulsed the infamous charge of Confederate Major General George Pickett on July 3, 1863. Hancock lies within a small stone mausoleum in Montgomery Cemetery in West Norriton.

Franklin County is a trove of historical treasures, beginning with colonial frontier history and moving through the community's Civil War story of the Underground Railroad, Gettysburg Campaign, the Burning of Chambersburg, and more.
