Through the Sproul State Forest runs the West Branch of the mighty Susquehanna River, site of the Karthaus Canoe Launch. The launch is an easily accessible point along this 400-mile meandering swath that drains to the far-off Chesapeake Bay. The water is highest in spring, which makes it easy to paddle from Karthaus to Renovo (if you're so inclined), but the river is navigable in fall as well. Take a leisurely tour on the water for a new perspective on the abundant wildlife and waterfowl that live along the river's banks. The quiet and tranquility of a canoe trip set the stage for a parade of eastern tiger swallowtails, and other butterflies. Check the woodland buffer along the river's edge for red-eyed vireos and barn and tree swallows.
