Step into the Powel House and enter the world of the colonial elite. Samuel Powel was the mayor of Philadelphia when independence from England was declared. Famous names of the patriot cause - George Washington, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin were all entertained here, as Samuel and Elizabeth Willing Powel were preeminent hosts of the newly created Nation. Today, visitors can stroll through the room where Washington danced, ponder the sumptuous meals served in the Powel's dining room, visit the parlor where political ideas were debated over tea and Madeira wine, and relax in the beautiful colonial garden.
