The Luzerne County Historical Society was formed in 1858 as the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society. A permanent museum was built in 1893 to showcase various exhibits related to the history of Luzerne County. The Bishop Memorial Library was opened in 1971, holding the library and archives of the Society. The Swetland Homestead was acquired in 1858 and the Denison House in 2006, both historic homes in which guided tours are given. Their mission is to promote and preserve the history and heritage of Luzerne County.
