St. Marys, home of the famous and wildly popular VisitPA Elk Cam, began in 1842 when a group of Bavarian Catholics came to the area to escape persecution in the cities of the east coast. Accordingly, the town is now known for a product often associated with Germany: beer. The Straub Brewery offers tours every weekday and features an Eternal Tap that dispenses - believe it or not - free beer. St. Marys is also a great place to shop for antiques, see historic churches, and visit with the PA elk herd.

The fastest way to work on an icy morning
Submitted by: Pam
Years ago I was working part-time at the CVS. On a very cold and icy morning, I received a phone call asking me to work on my day off because some employees could not make it into work. I lived seven avenues above the pharmacy and thought it would be no problem to work that day. Well, when I started out on my sidewalk, I slipped and fell. Therefore, I knew I'd not be able to drive down the icy hill. Instead, I ripped up a large box and sat on it - and away I went! As I flew down the hill passing Sixth Ave. and then Fifth Ave, I was twisting and turning while wondering where I would end up. Only in the hills of Pennsylvania could this happen! I passed Fourth Ave and then Third. But things turned for the worse then. My rear side was hurting because I had been sliding over top of iced cinders that were rubbing me raw. Besides, the cardboard lost it course as I headed for a deep ditch and went head first into the great unknown. The cardboard was torn but at least the ice had dissipated in the lower avenues and I was able to walk carefully the rest of the way to the pharmacy. When I entered the store, the pharmacist said "What happened to you? Looks like you had been in a fight!" I just gave him a dirty look and went about planning for a winter away from home for the following year.
