Bethlehem

Known as the Christmas City, this Lehigh Valley city was originally settled by the Moravians, the oldest Protestant denomination in the world. The city got its name on Christmas Eve in 1741, when Count Zinzendorf of Saxony visited a two-room log house that housed both people and animals. Today, a huge electrical star shines nightly from the peak of South Mountain. Bethlehem's recent history has been inextricably linked with that of the Bethlehem Steel Company. Bethlehem is the home of Lehigh University; many community events and traditional entertainments make this diverse city a place to see year-round.

Gotta love the lava

If you're coming to the area, you should consider turning your visit into at least an overnight stay. I recommend staying at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem. It's been restored to its 1922 grandeur. The floor-to-ceiling Palladian windows offer a dramatic view of this vibrant area. There are dozens of places to eat and shop and things to do within walking distance of this bustling Main Street. One of my favorite restaurants is the Starfish Brasserie on Broad Street offers amazing lunch and dinner specials that will leave your tummy happy. I love the chocolate lava cake.
