Situated north of the Allegheny Front in the Allegheny Plateau region, this area contains rugged & remote forest land. The 52-mile Chuck Keiper Trail (CKT) traverses the southern portion of the wild area. The area can be viewed from 2 overlooks along Rt 144; Fish Dam & Dennison Run Overlook. Common brids seen in spring & summer include Eastern Towhee, Red-eyed Vireo, Black-throated Green Warbler, American Redstart, Ovenbird & Black-&-white Warbler. Year-round residents: Ruffed Grouse & Wild Turkey. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, bobcat, black bear & coyote.
Location: Hike into wild area via the CKT travel Rt 144 north from I-80 at Snow Shoe. Follow Rt 144 through Moshannon. Drive Rt 144 north for 18 miles from stop sign in Moshannon. Pass Yost Ridge Rd & Fisher Fire Rd on left. Turn left onto Jews Run Rd. Drive 1 mile to dirt parking lot on left. Park & follow signs to north into Fish Dam Wild Area. Wild area is also accessible by canoe from West Branch of Susquehanna River.
