In Indiana, Pennsylvania, the ghost stories along this hiking trail
of abandoned mining towns revolve around Eliza Furnace, one of the
best preserved iron furnaces in the U.S., and its owner David Ritter.
Some say that Ritter's wife ran off with a man named George Rodgers,
and that because of this, Ritter hanged himself at the furnace.
Another story is that Ritter's son fell into the furnace and was
killed, and that he was so distraught he hanged himself. For these
reasons, it has been supposed that the furnace is haunted and that
Ritter's ghost can be seen hanging in the furnace's entrance.
