Although it's not "haunted," the Hex Highway, or Old Route
22, is a tour exploring a past of superstition and amazing craftsmanship.
Hex signs were created centuries ago by German, or "Deutsch,"
immigrants, who typically painted their furniture and household items
with vibrant colors, using symbolism and medieval imagery to represent
their religious beliefs and in hopes of bringing good fortune to
their lives. Round, bright, and colorful, hex signs can be spotted
hung over barns and houses in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. A lovely
22" x 28" Barn Art poster and a brochure are available from
the Reading and Berks County Visitors Bureau to commemorate your
visit. Contact them at (voice) 610-375-4085 or toll-free at (voice) 1-800-443-6610.
