Take a Quest for Freedom Live and Learn Roadtrip Weekend
Live a little and learn a lot in Pennsylvania by exploring the history and heritage of the quest for freedom through great literature.
Take a roadtrip along Pennsylvania’s I-76 and I-79 and come to a Quest for Freedom Live and Learn weekend in Philadelphia, Lancaster, or Pittsburgh.
Join us as we explore the Civil War and Underground Railroad through great literature, heritage tours, museum exhibits, living history, re-enactments, restaurant outings and special room rates.
On Friday evening, a scholar will introduce a featured book and lead a spirited discussion on its historical and social significance. But don’t worry about reading the books first – just hit the road and bring them with you! On Saturday, embark on tours of Underground Railroad, Civil War and other historic sites that relate to the people, places and events found in the book.
...or Explore Our Underground Railroad Heritage On Your Own
African Americans in Pennsylvania played a major role in our nation's struggle for individual freedom. From the dawn's early light of the Revolution through the dark days of the Civil War and beyond, Pennsylvanians pushed freedom to the fore of every fight.
We invite you to learn more about how Pennsylvania's rich and exciting history created today's welcoming and diverse society. Use this page to find Pennsylvania's Underground Railroad Heritage. Or, at www.questforfreedom.org, you can explore the Freedom Journeys of the Commonwealth - a collection of roadtrips that stretch from Philadelphia through Gettysburg, up to Scranton, and westward to Lake Erie and the central mountains.
