Carlisle

Carlisle, PA
Region: Dutch Country Roads

Carlisle, founded in 1751, is the home of Carlisle Barracks, the second-oldest army post in the United States. The barracks was later the Carlisle Indian School, where Jim Thorpe played; it's now the home of the U. S. Army War College. Fittingly, the town is also home to the Army Heritage and Education Center and Heritage Trail. The Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Trout Gallery, Dickinson College, and Penn State's Dickinson School of Law add to the cultural and educational character of the town. The eleven Carlisle Car Shows and swap meets and various fairs and festivals bring more than 500,000 people a year to this bustling area. Art galleries, museums, shops, antique co-ops, and farmers markets mean visitors will have an easy time keeping busy!
