Seems like we just settled into hot weather, days at the pool and fresh corn and it is already the beginning of August! Wondering where the time went, and worried the carefree days of summer are passing you by before you get the chance to kick up your heels a bit? Not to worry, there are still plenty of leisure travel opportunities here and abroad, if your idea of abroad is just west of the Allegheny Mountains.
End July and start August with the relative newcomer event on the block, the Mylan Classic golf tournament, July 29 through August 4 at Southpointe Golf Club, Canonsburg. Now in its 4th year, the Mylan Classic brings golf’s rising stars to Washington County for a week of community events, concerts, charitable causes and competition, all in the scenic Southpointe setting off I-79. New this year, the tournament moves up a month from its previous Labor Day weekend dates due to changes in the WEB.com schedule, and organizers have introduced a Washington County Tourism area where spectators can find out all there is to do in the county after a full day on the links. Like they say, come for the pros and stay for the shows, you’ll get it all at this year’s Mylan Classic.
The week after, trade your golf glove for your favorite mitt and get to Washington Park for the 51st PONY League World Series. Held at venerable Lew Hays Field, this local favorite draws teams and crowds from around the world and around the corner, as teams from as far away as Taiwan, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Japan, and as close as Johnstown, Youngstown, and host Washington, regularly compete for the title. Baseball royalty such as Pie Traynor, Ted Williams, Roberto Clemente, Don Mattingly and our own Kent Tekulve have made time for the PONY World Series over the years, where the future stars of the big show put on a show for the locals. Root, root, root for the home team, but root for them all as they converge on Washington County in August for this one of a kind celebration of America’s pastime.
What’s the summer without a day (or more) at the fair? It’s been 205 years since the Morganza Fair was first held in Washington County, and it’s fair to say the event has grown just a bit since then. This year’s event runs from Friday, August 9th through Saturday, August 17th, and features the finest in Washington County livestock, produce, home demonstrations, and good old fashioned fun. This year’s fair theme is “Harvest Your Dreams,” celebrating Western Pennsylvania’s heritage, culture and community through education and entertainment. They must be doing something right - over 300,000 locals and visitors frequent the Fair & Expo Center each year for the fair and other events.
Make sure you are in the right place at the right time to grab the best of summer right here in Washington County. Whether it’s hoisting the winner’s cup, making the game winning clutch hit, or being crowned princess, it’s the stuff dreams are made of, right here in our own backyard.
